EVENT SPEAKER

Lisa Peterson

Lisa Peterson has embraced the sport of purebred dogs for nearly 25 years as an owner/breeder/handler of Norwegian Elkhounds with more than a dozen AKC Champions to her credit. A former newspaper journalist, Lisa speaks to the media as an expert on purebred dog breeding and canine legislation, appears on radio and TV as an AKC spokesperson, and authors the syndicated column Ask AKC. In her role as AKC’s Director of Club Communications she helps AKC-affiliated clubs develop their own PR strategies and coaches individuals on becoming spokespersons.

Tips from Lisa Peterson

Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL), targeting specific breeds as being inherently dangerous or needing extra regulation based solely on breed alone, is a growing and disturbing trend across the country.

BSL comes in many forms from outright bans, to mandatory spay and neuter of certain breeds, to requiring owners of certain breeds to carry liability insurance, muzzle their pets in public or post signs on their property.

BSL has grown from 66 known bills in 2004 to more than 110 in 2006 at the local and state levels.

Remember it’s “Deed Not Breed” when asking lawmakers to draft generic dangerous dog laws that are enforceable, measurable and fair to responsible dog owners and breeders.

The American Kennel Club’s Canine Legislation Department tracks anti-dog laws across the country. Contact them at doglaw@akc.org or visit www.akc.org
